A music festival may last barely a weekend, but its impact begins long before the lights come on and continues after the last stage stands empty. Thousands of people travel to get there, tonnes of equipment cross roads and cities, structures are built and dismantled, and energy, water and food are consumed — all of it leaving a footprint we rarely see while we enjoy the show. How big is that footprint, really? The numbers behind Latin America’s festival industry help size up the phenomenon and explain why estimating and managing the event carbon footprint is no longer just an environmental matter, but an increasingly decisive challenge for the future of live events.
The event carbon footprint in Latin America
The live events and festival industry in Latin America is expanding fast. In 2024 alone, the regional music festival market reached an estimated value of USD 107 million, with a projected compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 8.42% through 2030 [1]. That growth, however, drags along a question that more and more organizers, sponsors and city authorities are asking: what is the estimated carbon footprint of these events, and who is accountable for it?
Regulatory pressure is already tangible. Colombia made sustainability reporting aligned with ISSB standards mandatory for large companies [2], and countries such as Chile, Mexico and Brazil are advancing green taxonomies that will eventually reach the entertainment sector. Reputationally, a festival that cannot demonstrate environmental management exposes itself to greenwashing accusations, the loss of climate-conscious sponsors, and restrictions on operating in public spaces.
This is the context in which events like Festival Cordillera 2026 — scheduled for 12 and 13 September at Parque Simón Bolívar in Bogotá, with more than 65,000 expected attendees and running under the banner “El futuro es latino” — become real-world laboratories of what it means to adopt good sustainability practices at mass events. It is not just about planting trees at the end: it is about making informed decisions from the very first production meeting.
Estimating a festival’s footprint is not the same as estimating a company’s
One of the most frequent mistakes event organizers make when tackling their carbon footprint is applying the same conceptual framework companies use. In the corporate world, carbon footprint estimation is structured around scopes 1, 2 and 3: direct emissions, indirect emissions from purchased energy, and the entire value chain. That approach makes sense when quantifying the continuous operation of an organization over a fiscal year.
But an event is not a continuous operation. A festival like Cordillera lasts two days, even though its footprint builds up over weeks. That is why the right methodology for estimating the event carbon footprint is the life-cycle approach, which splits emissions into four stages:
- Planning: scouting trips, in-person meetings of the organizing team, energy use in offices, printing of promotional materials and advance freight shipments.
- Setup: transport of stages, sound and lighting equipment; use of heavy machinery, diesel generators and temporary construction materials; accommodation and catering for technical crews.
- Live event: electricity consumption of the show, attendee travel (the largest contributor at most festivals), solid waste generation, and water and food consumption in the catering area.
- Teardown: removal of infrastructure, final waste management, return transport of equipment and restoration of the site.
This stage-by-stage approach lets organizers identify exactly where their emissions concentrate and take concrete operational decisions: is it worth hiring local sound providers to cut the transport footprint of the setup stage? Is the waste management system during the live event generating more methane emissions than necessary? Those questions only appear when the right framework is used. What we have learned from Festival Cordillera
The experience CarbonBox has accumulated estimating the carbon footprint of previous editions of Festival Cordillera yields concrete lessons that apply to any mass-event organizer in the region.
Air travel dominates emissions. According to the estimates produced, roughly 90% of the festival’s total emissions come from air travel — both international artists flying into Bogotá and attendees travelling from other Colombian cities and neighbouring countries [3]. This finding is consistent with the international literature on music festivals and carries a direct implication: any reduction strategy that does not address travel is ignoring the main source of impact.
Waste management with “ecoguardianes”. Festival Cordillera implemented a source-separation programme with volunteers known as ecoguardianes, who guided attendees in the correct disposal of recyclable, organic and non-recoverable waste. The strategy not only improved the event’s recycling rates: it also generated valuable data on waste composition that fed the estimation of emissions associated with solid waste management.
Carbon neutrality campaign: “Si al Simón Bolívar voy, Carbono Neutro soy”. Bogotá’s District Institute for Recreation and Sport (IDRD) launched an environmental strategy that achieved carbon neutrality for Parque Simón Bolívar, the venue that hosts Colombia’s biggest festivals and concerts. The park — where the festival takes place — estimates and offsets the emissions of its own operation and those of third parties. Festival organizers using this venue are therefore required to estimate, manage and offset their carbon emissions.
Carbon neutrality certification. The festival’s carbon neutrality commitment was verified by ICONTEC, a validation and verification body recognized in Colombia [4]. As part of the offsetting and emissions management strategy, a long-term reduction and offsetting plan and an environmental policy were produced. This combination of rigorous estimation + emissions management + offsetting with verified carbon credits is the standard that low-carbon events should follow.
Festival without an estimate vs. festival with a carbon footprint estimate
The table below illustrates the concrete differences between a festival that operates without a formal estimate of its carbon footprint and one that works with a specialized tool such as CarbonBox:

The road to carbon neutrality: beyond offsetting
Reaching carbon neutrality at an event is a legitimate goal, and one increasingly demanded by attendees, sponsors and regulators. The route, however, matters as much as the destination. A festival that offsets 100% of its emissions without first trying to reduce them is buying a label, not building a strategy.
The recommended approach follows the mitigation hierarchy: avoid → reduce → offset [6]. First, unnecessary emission sources are eliminated (printed materials that could be digital, for instance). Then, unavoidable sources are optimized (equipment transported in lower-consumption vehicles, grid power instead of diesel generators). Finally, residual emissions — those that cannot be eliminated or reduced with the available technology and budget — are offset by acquiring carbon credits from projects verified under recognized standards such as Verra VCS or Gold Standard.
Understanding the difference between carbon credits and other market instruments is essential for making informed decisions.
