FAQ

We answer your questions

What is a carbon footprint?+

It is an indicator that reflects the total amount of greenhouse gas emissions released into the atmosphere as a result of human activities, direct or indirect, within an activity, process, event or human action.

There are three types of carbon footprints:

  • Corporate or organizational: we measure the total greenhouse gas emissions produced by a company across all of its operations.
  • Event: we calculate the emissions generated throughout the event's life cycle, including planning, setup, operation and teardown.
  • Product: we analyze the full life cycle of a product, from raw material extraction to its final disposal.
What are greenhouse gas emission reductions?+

They are the actions and strategies implemented to lower the amount of greenhouse gases released into the atmosphere as a result of human activities. This includes practices such as optimizing energy use, implementing efficient technology and transitioning toward renewable energy sources.

What is carbon neutrality?+

It refers to the state in which an organization, product, service or event achieves a net balance of greenhouse gas emissions, offsetting the emissions generated with an equivalent amount of reductions or removals elsewhere. It is generally achieved by combining the direct reduction of emissions with the offsetting of the remainder through projects that absorb CO₂, such as reforestation or investments in renewable energy.

What is zero carbon or net zero?+

The term “zero carbon” or “net zero” refers to the balance between the amount of carbon dioxide (CO₂) emitted into the atmosphere and the amount removed from it. To achieve it, a company must reduce its CO₂ emissions to a minimum and offset the remainder by purchasing certified carbon credits.

Why measure your carbon footprint?+

Because of its many strategic benefits:

  • It improves your standing with investors: 80% consider sustainability criteria (PwC, 2021).
  • It increases consumer preference: 71% prefer brands committed to the environment (IBM, 2021).
  • It attracts and retains talent: 70% of employees prefer sustainable companies (Deloitte, 2021).
  • It anticipates emerging regulatory requirements.
  • It identifies opportunities for efficiency and savings of natural and economic resources.
What is CarbonBox?+

CarbonBox is a software as a service (SaaS) that helps companies meet their sustainability goals through estimation, reduction and offsetting, and helps organizations achieve emission reductions and carbon neutrality for companies, events or products.

Why should I choose CarbonBox and not another solution?+

CarbonBox offers unique advantages:

  • We save 30% of the time and improve the productivity of carbon management teams by 40%.
  • We teach you how to estimate carbon footprints and manage them.
  • A digital platform that eliminates the errors of manual calculation.
  • Support from certified experts.
  • A scalable solution based on the size and needs of your company.
  • Progressive autonomy, which reduces costs in the long run.
Does CarbonBox measure greenhouse gases directly at the emission sources?+

No. Carbon footprints are mostly estimates based on secondary information. CarbonBox uses tier 1 (basic, with reference data) and tier 2 (intermediate, with local data and more precise results) methodologies from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), applying local emission factors. We do not perform on-site measurements at the emission sources.

However, if you have direct measurements of greenhouse gases, our platform allows you to enter that data and quantify it as part of the aggregated carbon footprint.

Which methodologies do you use to measure the carbon footprint?+

We apply international standards and guidelines according to the type of footprint:

  • Corporate GHG inventories: GHG Protocol and ISO 14064-1, under the guidelines of IPCC 2006 and its 2019 refinement.
  • Product footprint and Life Cycle Assessment: ISO 14040, ISO 14044, ISO 14067 and PAS 2050.
  • Reductions and mitigation targets: GHG Protocol Mitigation Goal Standard (WRI) and Science Based Targets (SBTi).
Are the CarbonBox modules available for any sector and country?+

Yes. CarbonBox automation makes it possible to calculate greenhouse gases (GHG) across every sector of the economy and in every country in Latin America.

We have more than 30,000 emission factors in our database, sourced from more than 30 countries and validated by various auditors in GHG inventory verification processes.

In addition, if your activities include international product distribution —for example, exports to European countries—, you can estimate the emissions of maritime and land transport anywhere in the world.

Can CarbonBox estimate Scope 1, 2 and 3 of a carbon footprint?+

Yes. CarbonBox estimates all scopes of the GHG Protocol standard for corporate GHG inventories:

  • Scope 1: direct emissions (fuels, owned fleet).
  • Scope 2: indirect emissions from energy consumption.
  • Scope 3: other indirect emissions (travel, transport, supply chain).

By combining technology and innovation, we are able to estimate Scope 3, one of the most complex to integrate into corporate carbon footprints.

How is data entered into the platform?+

We offer multiple ways to enter data:

  • Manual entry.
  • Import via Excel files.
  • API integration with your existing systems.
What kind of reports can I obtain?+

We can generate the following reports:

  • A 100% auditable technical report under the selected standard.
  • An executive summary.
  • A detailed technical summary.
How do you guarantee data accuracy? Does CarbonBox calculate uncertainty?+

The uncertainty of a GHG inventory refers to the lack of certainty in the emissions data, resulting from factors such as the use of secondary information, unrepresentative methods or incomplete information about the sources.

CarbonBox uses statistical methods to determine the degree of certainty of the results, in accordance with the methodologies of the GHG Protocol and the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change 2006.

Is the platform updated with new emission factors?+

Yes. We keep our emission factors database constantly updated in line with the official advances of each country.

Do I need technical knowledge to use the platform?+

No. The platform is designed to be intuitive and easy to use. In addition, we include:

  • Technical training for your team.
  • Support from a dedicated expert.
  • Access to a library of educational resources.
What does the annual membership include?+

We offer three annual plans —Essential, Professional and Expert—, each with different services and levels of support.

You can review in detail what each membership includes in the plans section, at the top of this page.

See the plans ↑
How does the loyalty program work?+

We reward your consistency: as long as you renew your membership each year without letting it expire, the price stays frozen and does not increase over time. This way, companies that sustain their climate commitment year after year always keep their initial rate.

Can I obtain certifications with CarbonBox results?+

Yes. Our reports are compatible with the requirements for:

  • Carbon Neutral certification.
  • GHG inventory verification.
  • GRI reports (305 indicators).
  • CDP questionnaires.
  • Global Compact communications on progress.
  • Integrated reports under IIRC standards.

Please note that CarbonBox does not issue certifications: we generate the reports, which can then be audited or verified by an accredited third party.

Do you offer training for our internal team?+

Yes. All of our memberships include workshops and technical training so your team can build capabilities in:

  • Carbon footprint concepts.
  • Use of the platform.
  • Mitigation strategies.
  • Carbon markets.
How long does it take to develop my company's carbon footprint?+

Platform implementation is immediate. In 5 stages, over 3 to 4 months, we obtain your carbon footprint.

Data collection and validation is the most complex and time-consuming phase. Its duration depends on the size and complexity of your organization and on the availability of the team to organize the information.

How is CarbonBox customized with my company's information?+

You can assign to emission sources the names your company uses internally. For example, you can segment sites or operational activities, so that results and reports are tailored to your business language.

If I purchase CarbonBox mid-year, do I pay the full annual fee?+

Yes. The service includes 12 months of access to the platform and to the additional services you purchased, regardless of the month in which you signed up; renewal covers another 12 months. We also offer customized renewal dates based on your budget cycle.

Does CarbonBox certify or verify carbon footprints, emission reductions or offsetting?+

No. CarbonBox is a platform created by experts in the estimation and management of GHG emissions, and it does not hold the accreditations to verify or certify inventory reports, carbon reductions or carbon neutrality.

Verification or certification is carried out by the accredited Validation and Verification Bodies in each country, such as ICONTEC or Bureau Veritas, which have teams of certified auditors for these processes.

What happens if I need to modify a specific calculation for my company?+

CarbonBox modules are editable: you can modify the input data whenever you need to. We also offer customization of emission factors for specific calculations in specialized industries.
